Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strategic autonomy, strong national institutions and the protection of long-term national interests as it navigates rising global and regional risks, positioning itself as a key stabilising force in West Africa and beyond.
The assurance was given by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, while speaking at a high-level Foreign Policy Live panel, held in partnership with the Doha Forum under the theme “Rethinking Risk.”
Addressing global policymakers and foreign affairs experts, Tuggar said Nigeria continues to pursue an interest-driven, non-aligned foreign policy, balancing constructive diplomatic engagement with its security responsibilities in a volatile regional environment. He stressed that Nigeria’s approach prioritises national sovereignty while remaining open to cooperation that advances peace, economic growth and regional stability.
The minister highlighted ongoing government-led initiatives aimed at strengthening institutions, enhancing economic resilience and reinforcing Nigeria’s leadership role in West Africa. According to him, Nigeria’s growing economic relevance and diplomatic footprint underpin its capacity to manage risks and contribute meaningfully to conflict prevention and regional stability.
Tuggar noted that Nigeria remains committed to responsible leadership, particularly in West Africa, where security challenges and political transitions demand firm yet balanced engagement. He added that the country’s foreign policy choices are guided by long-term national interests rather than shifting global alignments.
Observers at the forum said Nigeria’s stance reflects a deliberate effort to assert policy independence while projecting itself as a reliable regional anchor in an increasingly uncertain global order.
