Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening and empowering the Nigerian Armed Forces in their fight against the nation’s evolving security challenges.
Speaking on Thursday, 9 January 2026, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Vice President delivered remarks during a special Juma’a prayer held at the National Mosque, Abuja, to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
Shettima paid glowing tribute to officers and soldiers who paid the supreme price in defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity, as well as the protection of lives and property across the country. He described their sacrifices as the bedrock of national peace and unity, stressing that the nation remains eternally grateful to its fallen heroes.
He assured serving personnel and the families of fallen soldiers that the Tinubu administration is committed to providing the Armed Forces with the resources, support and motivation required to confront security threats and sustain operational effectiveness.
The annual observance, traditionally held on 15 January, was recently renamed from Armed Forces Remembrance Day to Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, underscoring its dual purpose of honouring active service members while remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
The solemn ceremony drew senior government officials, military leaders and worshippers, united in prayers for peace, national stability and the continued success of Nigeria’s Armed Forces.
