The Federal Government has commenced a strategic review of Nigeria’s tariff policies as part of renewed efforts to strengthen industrial growth, enhance economic competitiveness, and reduce the cost of doing business across key sectors of the economy.

The review was led by the Minister of State for Finance, Hon. (Dr.) Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, during a high-level engagement with the Tariffs Review Board, where discussions centred on aligning fiscal and trade policies with the evolving needs of the industrial and manufacturing sectors.

Officials at the meeting examined ways to encourage local production, protect domestic industries from unfair competition, and strike a careful balance that allows access to essential imports while deepening Nigeria’s local value chains. Particular attention was paid to challenges faced by manufacturers, including input costs, access to raw materials, and the impact of tariffs on productivity and competitiveness.

Dr. Uzoka-Anite emphasised that the review is anchored on data-driven policymaking, noting that tariff reforms must support the broader industrialisation agenda while fostering a resilient and inclusive economy. She stressed that well-calibrated tariff structures can stimulate investment, promote job creation, and position Nigerian industries to compete more effectively within regional and global markets.

The ongoing review is expected to inform future policy adjustments aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s manufacturing base, improving investor confidence, and accelerating sustainable economic growth in line with national development priorities.
