Port Harcourt, Rivers State — The Federal Government has intensified its commitment to infrastructure renewal as top officials last Wednesday carried out an on-the-spot inspection of the ongoing upgrade of the East–West Road in Rivers State, one of Nigeria’s most strategic transport corridors and a flagship project under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The inspection team, drawn from the Federal Ministry of Works and allied agencies, assessed the pace, quality and scope of work on the long-stalled highway, which connects Rivers to Bayelsa, Delta, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, and serves as a critical artery for oil, gas, trade and human movement across the Niger Delta.

From Symbol of Neglect to Test Case of Renewal

For decades, the East–West Road has been a byword for infrastructural decay—marked by failed sections, flooding, gridlock and tragic accidents. The current upgrade, officials said, is aimed at permanently correcting structural failures through reinforced pavement, improved drainage systems, expanded carriageways and flood-control engineering.

Speaking during the inspection, FG representatives reaffirmed that the Tinubu administration is determined to deliver durable infrastructure, not cosmetic repairs, noting that the road’s rehabilitation is being handled with modern engineering standards to withstand the Niger Delta’s challenging terrain.

“This project is not just about asphalt; it is about restoring confidence, saving lives and unlocking economic value,” one official stated.

Economic Lifeline for the Niger Delta

The East–West Road is central to Nigeria’s energy and logistics ecosystem, linking major oil and gas installations, industrial hubs, ports and agrarian communities. Officials stressed that completing the upgrade will significantly reduce travel time, lower transport costs, ease movement of petroleum products and boost regional commerce.

Local communities and road users have long argued that the road’s poor condition inflated food prices, delayed business operations and constrained investment. The Renewed Hope-driven intervention is expected to reverse these trends.

Quality Assurance and Accountability

During the inspection, contractors were directed to adhere strictly to project timelines and specifications, with assurances that funding is being prioritised to prevent the stop-start cycle that plagued the project in the past. Officials also inspected drainage channels and bridge sections, key components designed to prevent the recurrent washouts that previously crippled the road.

The Federal Government pledged sustained monitoring to ensure value for money and timely delivery.

Infrastructure as a Pillar of Renewed Hope

The East–West Road upgrade is part of a broader national infrastructure push that includes highways, bridges, rail and ports, aimed at driving growth, enhancing national integration and supporting security operations.

As inspection teams concluded their visit, the message was clear: the era of abandoned critical infrastructure is ending. For millions of Nigerians who depend on the East–West Road daily, the Renewed Hope Agenda is beginning to take tangible shape—one kilometre at a time.
