EFCC RAID ON NGIGE’S ABUJA HOME SPARKS OUTRAGE

Former Minister Whisked Away in Pyjamas, Arraigned in Court Amid Corruption Allegations

The political and legal atmosphere in Abuja thickened on last Monday after operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) stormed the Asokoro residence of former Minister of Labour and Productivity and ex-Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chris Ngige, whisking him away in what family sources described as a “commando-style midnight operation.”

Ngige, who served twice as minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari, was reportedly taken away by about 20 EFCC officers from the Commission’s Wuse II Zonal Office.

According to a family member, the former minister was denied the opportunity to change clothes and was taken away in the pyjamas he was wearing at the time of the encounter.

UNRESOLVED QUESTIONS: EFCC CHARGES NGIGE

Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that there is an ongoing investigation, on the matter.

The former governor, who had earlier been invited and questioned by EFCC, was directed to return his travel documents as part of his bail conditions.

HOW A MEDICAL TRIP BECAME A LEGAL NIGHTMARE

Information gathered by AWC revealed that Dr. Ngige embarked on a medical trip to the United States.
However, while transiting through the United Kingdom, he lost his passport, was unable to proceed, and had to abort the journey.

He subsequently obtained emergency travel documents from the Nigerian High Commission in London, enabling his return to Abuja.

Upon arrival, Ngige reportedly drafted a letter to the EFCC notifying the Commission of the loss of his passport and explaining his inability to return the document as required.
The letter, however, was yet to be submitted before the EFCC operatives stormed his home.

“I HAVE NOT VIOLATED MY BAIL TERMS”—NGIGE TELLS INVESTIGATORS

According to close associates, Ngige expressed shock and confusion over the sudden escalation, insisting he had not breached his administrative bail conditions and had continued cooperating with the agency.

A senior family member, who witnessed the raid, lamented what they described as “unnecessary intimidation.”

“He has been in touch with the EFCC. He never refused to honour their requests. He even drafted a letter about losing his passport. Why this commando action?”

LEGAL FIREWORKS EXPECTED IN COURT

Legal analysts say the case could become politically sensitive, given Ngige’s long public service record and prominent role during the Buhari administration.

WHAT WE KNOW — AND DO NOT KNOW

Known:

  • Ngige was on EFCC administrative bail.
  • He had been cooperating with investigators.
  • He lost his passport in the UK and obtained temporary documents.
  • He was preparing a letter to notify EFCC before his arrest.
  • He was arrested in an unusually forceful operation.

Unknown:

  • Why EFCC conducted a raid rather than request his appearance.
  • Whether political motivations are involved.

EYES ON EFCC AS NIGERIANS DEMAND CLARITY

The arrest has triggered debate among legal experts, political observers, and the public, with many calling for transparency and fairness in the handling of high-profile investigations.

Civil society organisations monitoring anti-corruption processes say EFCC must avoid actions that appear excessive or prejudicial, especially when dealing with former public office holders who have shown willingness to cooperate.

AWC WILL BRING MORE UPDATES AS THE STORY UNFOLDS…
